Kogarah's local government area (LGA) is located 14km south of the Sydney CBD, covers almost 20 square kilometres and has a population of around 53 000 people. It is part of the St George region.
The area is known for its sporting history, picturesque parks and foreshore and its relaxed, family-oriented lifestyle. 
'Kogarah' the name is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning rushes or place of reeds.

The CIty of Kogarah's community profile presents the population characteristics of our community, how they have changed over time and how they compare to other areas. Our community profile and demographics assist Council, the general public, students, community groups, business and investors to become more informed about the community.

The profile presents data from 2011, 2006, 2001, 1996 and 1991 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census of Population and Housing for the Kogarah local government area. This data is presented in easy to use tables, charts and commentary to answer the majority of frequently asked socio-demographic questions.

Kogarah City Community Atlas

The City of Kogarah's community atlas presents key socio-demographic characteristics for the area in a series of interactive maps. Based on data from the 2006 Census of Population and Housing (Australian Bureau of Statistics), each map is prepared using the finest level of detail to help identify spatial patterns and trends in our local government area. 2011 Census data will be available in the atlas at the end of November 2012.
