Moama is the main settlement in the Shire and is the gateway to this inland paradise. Mathoura is a quaint but progressive country town, still retaining its unique outback heritage. Other settlements include Bunnaloo and Womboota, each with a population of less than 100.
Indeed the Murray Shire is regarded as an innovative Local Government Authority and has been proactive in encouraging development in the area.

Murray Shire is located on the NSW/Victorian border at the closest point of the Murray River to Melbourne. This provides an area booming with tourism, industry, development and new residents. The Shire's main township is Moama and together with her Victorian neighbour Echuca, service a population of well over 20,000 people. Growth and Development - For the last 10 years, Murray Shire has consistently been recognised as one of the fastest growing Local Government Areas (LGA) in New South Wales. The 2013 ABS Estimated Residential Population showed Murray Shire having a population of 7,312. In 2007, Murray Shire was the fastest growing LGA in NSW and in 2009 was the third fastest. The growth is not surprising considering many significant recent developments within the Shire. Murray Shire Council has established a reputation as an innovative Local Government authority, which is proactive in attracting new industry and developments. Key Industries - Murray Shire has a strong and diverse business base. Key industries include agriculture, accommodation and food services, manufacturing, construction and retail and health care. Tourism is strong as the area is a major destination for visitors (with over 600,000 overnight visitors per year). Murray Shire enjoys a low unemployment rate of 5.2%.
