Visit, Live & Invest in Rockdale::

About Rockdale

Council has a comprehensive Community Profile which contains detailed information on Rockdale City based on the latest census. The profile includes maps and graphs and information is available for many suburbs.

You can also access the population forecasts, which are designed to inform community groups, investors, business, students and the general public about the City’s changing demographics as well as the key drivers of change

The City of Rockdale is located on the shores of historic Botany Bay, 12km from Sydney's Central Business District.

There is a lot to see and do in our City and most of these activities can be accessed by walking, cycling or taking public transport (see our On The Go map).

Rockdale City Council's Corporate and Tourism movie showcases the diversity, historical significance and geographical beauty that we have here in the LGA. This short film presents to the business community, visitors from overseas and proud locals, the plethora of investment, tourism and lifestyle opportunities that exist in the Rockdale area.

Incoming tourists touch down in and take off from the City of Rockdale, as the International Terminal of the Kingsford Smith Airport is located within the Rockdale City Council local government area.

Within its boundaries, the City of Rockdale is home to a diverse spectrum of commercial, residential, industrial, and natural landscapes - plus, of course, a vibrant mix of people.

The City of Rockdale has an estimated population of 103,164. As a multicultural area, around 55% of our residents come from a non-English speaking background. Languages spoken in our community include Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Macedonian and Spanish.

Over the years, the City of Rockdale has embraced new residents from the former Yugoslavia, the United Kingdom, Greece, Lebanon, Italy and, increasingly, Asian countries - in particular, China.

Our Sister Cities are often selected with the origins of our residents in mind (except for Rockdale, Texas, USA which we teamed up with for obvious reasons!).

An established area, the City of Rockdale's population growth has been relatively stable. Council is assisting the City's future growth by approving high density housing where appropriate, and implementing a major urban regeneration project which is transforming the industrial precinct at Wolli Creek into Sydney's southern gateway.

At nearby Arncliffe, the State Government is redeveloping Cooks Cove. The planned site will include an advanced technology centre, plenty of open space and a variety of recreational facilities.

Council's Social Plan contains more detailed information regarding the demographics of Rockdale.

The area is attractive to new residents and business owners for many reasons, not merely its proximity to the centre of Sydney. It is well serviced by buses (public and private) and trains (travelling along the Illawarra and East Hills railway lines), and major roads such as the Princes Highway and General Holmes Drive.

Tourism opportunities are growing in the area, particularly along Lady Robinsons Beach at Brighton Le Sands, which is home to a myriad of restaurants and cafes that reflect the area's cosmopolitan mix of cultures.

The City of Rockdale has several commercial centres - Rockdale, Bexley, Arncliffe, Brighton Le Sands, Kingsgrove and Ramsgate - and three notable industrial areas (Arncliffe, Rockdale and Kogarah).

The City of Rockdale's significant bushland and wetland areas have high conservation value and many contain threatened and endangered species of flora and fauna

The beaches at Brighton Le Sands, Monterey and Ramsgate are clean and safe, and the City boasts a range of aquatic facilities along Botany Bay, the Georges River and Cooks River - all ideal spots for sailing, canoeing, water-skiing, and fishing.

Council's recreational facilities include parks and sports fields, and the popular Bexley Swimming Centre. The Rockdale City Library is home to a comprehensive Local History Collection.

The City's history is rich and colourful, and its heritage buildings and natural areas are valued. Council encourages residents and visitors alike to take a Historic Walk or Heritage Drive around the City of Rockdale. Enjoy!
