Dr Stephen Rogers has been appointed as the new AIMS Science and Business Leader in Western Australia and takes up the position in Perth this week.
Based at the Perth offices of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS), the role forms an important strand in the Institute's national strategy to provide the science that underpins sustainable development of Australia's marine estate. It is expected that Dr Rogers will make regular trips to AIMS Townsville and Darwin offices as part of his portfolio.
Key to the role is the development of new AIMS projects to address industry and Government needs in WA, a role for which Dr Rogers is well suited having spent seven years as the CEO and Managing Director of two Cooperative Research Centres based in WA. Prior to that Dr Rogers worked for several years with CSIRO Land and Water, rising to Principal Research Scientist.
Dr Rogers extensive experience working with Government and industry in WA is complemented by a comprehensive array of technical expertise ranging from microbial biochemistry and molecular biology through to mineral processing and hydrometallurgy. These areas of research, in which Dr Rogers has published more than 90 journal and conference papers and technical reports, are highly relevant in the context of WA industry, and research priorities for Australia.
In addition to his research and business experience, Dr Rogers is also passionate about education, having worked for almost a decade as an affiliate lecturer in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Adelaide. And despite all these interests, Dr Rogers still finds time to serve as a volunteer fire fighter for the Roleystone Brigade, WA Bush Fire Service.
AIMS CEO, John Gunn, has welcomed the exciting appointment of Dr Rogers as part of the AIMS senior leadership team and looks forward to working closely with him in growing the institute's profile at both regional and national levels.
