The Australian Government today confirmed Australia's participation in 2012 Yeosu Expo, announcing Ian Thorpe and Yeojin Bae as Australian Pavilion Goodwill Ambassadors.
The 2012 Yeosu Expo is an International Expo in South Korea, whose focus will be striking a balancing between the preservation of ocean and coastal areas and economic development.
Held from 12 May 2012 to 12 August 2012, the event is expected to attract eight million visitors from more than 100 countries.
The Expo will give Australia an opportunity to showcase its strong credentials in protecting oceans and coastal areas.
Minister for Trade and Competitiveness Craig Emerson said Yeosu Expo 2012 would also provide the ideal setting to build on the trade and investment relationship with the Republic of Korea.
"Australia and Korea share a long history of friendship, business ties and diplomatic links," Dr Emerson said.
"Yeosu Expo 2012 provides a fascinating and colourful arena in which to build on this and work on new areas of cooperation.
"Participation will generate immediate and longer-term benefits for Australian businesses," Dr Emerson said.
Kevin Nixon, Head, Yeosu Expo 2012 Secretariat, said Australia had chosen 'In Harmony with the Ocean' as the overarching theme of the Australian Pavilion.
This drew from Australia's credentials as a nation with high environmental, scientific and technical capabilities in marine conservation, and a commitment to sustainable development of the country's vast natural assets.
"Australia is participating in the 2012 Yeosu Expo as it is an opportunity to highlight Australia's innovation, leadership and economic strengths," Mr Nixon said.
"We hope to showcase a multitude of reasons for businesses, students and tourists to visit, study and invest in Australia.
"Australia's participation is also an opportunity to highlight the country's commitment to helping shape a global solution towards an environmentally sustainable future," Mr Nixon said.
To assist in raising awareness of the Australian Pavilion and drive visitor attendance at the Expo, the Secretariat has appointed Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe and internationally-renowned, Korean-born Australian fashion designer Yeojin Bae as Australian Pavilion Goodwill Ambassadors.
Ian and Yeojin will join model and TV personality Jess Gomes, ARIA-nominated singer-songwriter Jessica Maubouy and Socceroos player Sasa Ognenovski as Goodwill Ambassadors.
The Australian Pavilion will take guests on a journey of discovery, in which they celebrate and learn about Australia's unique relationship with its coast and surrounding waters. Pavilion attendees will be taken through a three-act structure, with each act incorporating different exhibitions.
