Italian and Australian constructors team up for Perth rail link::

An Italian-Australian joint venture has been selected to build the A$2 billion Forrestfield-Airport Rail Link – a major infrastructure project funded by the Western Australia State Government.

The winning consortium, comprising the Italian construction giant Salini Impregilo S.p.A and the Perth-based mining and civil construction contractor NRW Pty Ltd, was chosen from a field of three bidders.

The Forrestfield-Airport Rail Link is a new train line that will improve connections to and from Perth airport, the city’s eastern suburbs, and regional centres. Part of the line will run underground.

The contract covers the design, construction, and maintenance of the new rail link, with contract negotiations between the joint venture and the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia expected to be finalised by May.

‘Planning for this transformational project is well advanced,’ said Dean Nalder, Western Australia’s Minister for Transport.

The Forrestfield-Airport Rail Link is due to open in 2020.
