This week in small business with Ombudsman Kate Carnell::

The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman, Kate Carnell, talks this week about planning for the year ahead, managing cash flow and how to understand and prevent cyber-attacks.

Planning for the year ahead: “As small business owners, this is a time to look at things you’ve put off since last year; the first one on the list is cash flow. Sit down with your accountant and look at your cash flow, your business plan, for the next 12 months.”

Cash flow: “Having the money available for your BAS payments, making sure you’re up to speed with superannuation payments for your staff, making sure you’re in the position to pay the bank what you owe them and what they’ll require... Those are things that are difficult, but with proper cash flow planning you can make them happen.”

Cyber security: “The ASBFEO has put together a really simple document that you can access on our website that, in just one page, will tell you what you have to do. It won’t cost you money, just a little bit of time to get it right.”

Energy: “Go and get an energy audit if you haven’t done so already. You can save a lot of money in electricity if you get someone to come in and have a look at how you use electricity.”
