Western Australia

Western Australia & Perth

Perth tied for fifth place in The Economist’s 2009 list of the World’s Most Liveable Cities. With a current population of 1.65 million, Perth is the capital and largest city of Western Australia. Largely the direct result of the recent mining and energy boom, Western Australia is currently the fastest growing state in Australia. Perth ranks fourth in size among Australia’s cities, and has a growth rate consistently above the national average.

Projections from the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimate that Perth could have almost 2.5 million residents by 2026, with a population approaching 4.2 million by 2056. With an area of over 2.5 million square kilometres, Western Australia is Australia’s largest state. Covering one third of the Australian continent, it accounts for 10 percent of Australia’s population. The Western Australian economy is primarily supported by the extraction and processing of an abundant range of mineral and petroleum commodities.
